Stats: What is the Corsi Rating?

By:
complicated math picture

Over the past few years, different statistics in hockey have been given increased focus as teams try to gain any insight and advantage they can. Several of these statistics you may have heard of before – names like Corsi and Fenwick, are being heard more and more frequently in the hockey community. The rise of several websites that track these statistics makes it easier for fans to access this information, but just how useful are these new metrics, can we use them to make any predictions?

Goalies: How the Colour of Goalie Pads Matters

By:
Different Colors of Goalie Pads

A goalie’s equipment is a somewhat personal matter. We all take pride on some sort of level with the gear that we own. It’s ours, we wear it constantly, and so much of it can reflect how we play as well as our personality. Some pads may be outgoing and flashy, while others conservative and utility based, but the decision between these two choices can all be reflected in the choice of colours for your pads.

At the Quarter Point: If the season ended today…

By:
The Stanley Cup NHL

Usually at this time of year is when you start to hear a lot of discussion concerning teams in and out of the playoff picture.  One of the most consistent points brought up is that by American Thanksgiving 80% of the teams in the playoffs will be the same come spring (I just thought I would mention that at Canadian Thanksgiving 100% of the teams are in the playoffs.).  I found myself thinking about this a lot this week.  A lot can happen within a season; significant injuries to a star player, an inexplicable winning/losing streak.  Although we try to quantify the game of hockey through stats (and advanced stats), sometimes the game itself is just so volatile that it is really hard to predict outcomes.   So I decided that throughout the rest of the season, I will be looking at who is in the Playoffs at:  the quarter, the half, three quarters, and the end of the season.  For the fun of it, I will also make a prediction as to what teams will win the first round matchup and my reasoning.  OK, here are the standings as they played out after each team had played 20 games:

Around the Arena: NHL Expansion

By:
2014-11-23 02_23_41-LasVegasArena_Exterior_Cuni.jpg (2700×1519)

For years NHL expansion has been a hot topic. I personally think that the largest factor behind this is the general rise in interest for hockey, especially in the United States. This rise in interest has created very vocal communities iterate that they heavily desire an NHL expansion team. The strong public interest in these communities had led investors to flock to these cities proposing plans and constructing arenas in the hopes of landing a NHL team and tapping into the financial prospects of a budding hockey market. As an architect, NHL expansion is intriguing. The coming of the “smart” arena is only a matter of time. “Smart” technology has almost become a necessity and has already made it into some sports stadiums and I can only guess this will hold true to any not currently under-construction NHL arena and will create a new idea of the design of an arena. This combined with myself being a huge hockey fan has made NHL expansion especially intriguing to me. So when reports started to surface of an ownership group being chosen for a Las Vegas NHL expansion team I just had to express my opinions on the subject. I will warn you upfront, nothing I will say is concrete as nothing is concrete until the NHL says as such. My opinions are completely my own and completely biased as I feel strongly about this subject. If you feel differently about this subject, I would love to hear your view as well, especially if you are coming from a potential NHL expansion market. I have only lived in original six markets (Toronto, Detroit) so this may skew my opinions on expansion. You have been warned.

My picks for the top 5 best and worst NHL jerseys of all time

Throughout their NHL viewing career, the average hockey fan is exposed to a very diverse collection of jerseys worn by various clubs across the league. Some teams seem to wear a new jersey every year, while some have not changed in nearly 100 years. Many of these jerseys hold significant historical importance and are considered a privilege to wear, while others are just downright embarrassing. This is my take on the 5 best and worst NHL jerseys of all time.

A Closer Look At: Fan Favourites

By:
jackets hartnell ac 02

This past weekend saw the return of Scott Hartnell to the Wells Fargo Center for the first time.  During his time as a Flyer, he endeared himself to Flyers fans for his ability to score, hit, fight, and …fall.  (Hartnell sponsors a fan created charity that tracks the incidents in which Hartnell falls every game.)  In 7 years he had 326 regular season points for the Flyers, along with 908 penalty minutes.  Looking at those two statistics alone will likely give you some insight as to what made Hartnell so popular in Philly.  Well that and…
