The Loser Point Part 1: I’m a Loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?

I have been a lifelong hockey fan, however, my serious interest in hockey really only picked up at the end of high school and into my University years.  I can still remember learning about Pro Line, and being the Starving Student that I was thought to myself “if I just put $5 a week on all the long shot games, I could easily put together some money to spend”.  So I would wait all week, and on Saturday mornings, I would walk to my local Convenience Store and place my bets.  Among the choices, I always remember the option of choosing a tie.  This always seemed like a ridiculous option.  After all, who hopes for ties (looking at you soccer… err, sorry football). Nonetheless, choosing a tie almost always paid higher, meaning that I would choose that every so often, me being the starving student that I was.  Then I would go home and wait…

With a 5-1 game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Kings last spring, the San Jose Sharks became just the fourth team in NHL history to lose a playoff series after having a 3-0 lead.

Their first round exit was just one of many disappointing post-seasons for the Sharks, a team that has never advanced past the Conference Finals despite having made the playoffs in 10 consecutive years and 17 of the 22 seasons since their inception. Management decided it was time for a change, and chose to reset the team’s leadership hierarchy. In late August they announced that training camp would begin with no named captains or alternates.

Toronto Maple Leafs: As the Leafs Begin to Change

The last two seasons have seen two monumental collapses for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They seemed like locks to make the 2013-2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs before the last month of the season. They looked as though they had the Boston Bruins exactly where they wanted them the year prior. So what happened? Was it Coaching? Leadership? Or was the pressure of the biggest market in hockey just too much for the young group of players to handle? It was impossible to say for sure what has happened the last two years, the only guarantee was that something had to change. This “culture change” as it was called by the management was put forth so that the events of the last two seasons would not be in vain, they had to be learned from. New players were brought in, managers and the coaching staff were changed and a new president was hired.  However, what it all boils down to is, will the changes be enough?

Fantasy Hockey: Cook Rating Explanation

By:

After playing in three different hockey pools last season, I found it useful to determine the value of a trade by determining how valuable a player is to me. My measure of value in a player is how often the player would do things in a game that would contribute to my head-to-head match up statistics in my hockey pools. After downloading the latest player stats spreadsheet, I made a formula using the programming abilities in Excel. The people that I have shown this formula to have said it’s useful and that I should share it somehow. So with the assistance of my programming friend Shawn Hind, we created this tool for everyone to use for free. Click here to start using the Cook Rating, or continue reading for an explanation of the Cook Rating.
