Admittedly, I am addicted to fantasy hockey. This is possibly due to my competitive nature but more likely due to the fact I was never able to skate good enough to play hockey so it was the only way to compete in the sport I loved to watch. Anyway, beyond fantasy hockey I also enjoy rambling so I figured I might as well combine the two. After all my other article series on this site, Around the Arena, tends to be more informative, so it only made sense to have a less formal series to alternate that with. So without further ado here are my 4 biggest thoughts related to fantasy hockey in the last 2 1/2 weeks.
The Real Second Screen:
All the movies coming out lately advertise the integration of mobile devices into the viewing experience. Personally the last thing I want to do while watching a film is be bombarded with facts and information about the making of the film, but hey, to each his own. However I guess I might be slightly hypocritical as I tend to have my computer screen up and the live fantasy stats showing while I watch the games each evening. Unlike movie second screens, I would have to say that fantasy as my second screen is hardly as distracting as trying to read paragraphs while watching a movie. Fantasy hockey live stats just make the game more exciting; it’s always nice to see your favourite team get the go-ahead goal while you also destroy all your friend’s hopes and dreams in fantasy hockey.
FX’s TV show has kinda degraded a bit over the seasons but it’s still one of my favourite tv shows. I can only hope that my addiction to fantasy hockey turns the antics often found in The League into my life once I hit my 30s. But a great way to hold me over till then would be a Canadian version of the show where the characters play fantasy hockey. I can just see it now, the references to kraft-dinner, one of the main characters is Scott and he is a dick. Classic Canadian South Park episodes combined with The League; definitely a full proof plan for a hit TV show… or not. Maybe I will just wait till I am 30 and play this out in my fantasy league.
Missing a Hot Streak:
All too often I wait too long to play a mediocre player on a hot streak. I sit there and bench him while I play the more proven player justifying that the unproven player must prove himself worthy of me benching an elite player to be able to play him instead. Finally the unproven player convinces me he is the real deal and I play him instead of my elite player. Next thing I know he gets no points and I have affectively wasted both his points during his hot streak when I had him benched and my benched elite player’s points. Damn my inability to trust a player on a hot streak.
Drafting a Goalie:
I absolutely can’t stand drafting goalies to my team. With no other players do I feel just as likely to get a stud as a dud. I mean what is it with most goalies and not being able to be consistent from season to season. All too often you draft the best goalies of last season just to see them falter for you all year. Is it really worthwhile to waste early draft picks on goalies when almost every goalie is just as likely to have a great season as a bad one. Obviously some are proven workhorses from season to season but that is just a small handful of goalies. If you get one of these (Howard, Lundqvist, Price) be thankful cause the majority of players in your league are hoping for some good luck with their goalies.
