The NHL’s Best in-Arena Quirks

By:

Even though I’m a very dedicated Toronto Maple Leafs fan (even in these trying times), I tend to watch many other hockey games throughout the season. While watching these games over the years, I’ve noticed that each arena has its own quirks, be it quirks in the environment of the arena itself, the fans, or even the players. There are many of these little quirks with each of the NHL teams, but I’ve selected my favourite for the purpose of this article.

114 days later, here we are at the start of the 2015-16 NHL season. Feels good, doesn’t it? Fantasy Hockey: Multi-Position Eligible Players

By:
brent-burns-nhl-san-jose-sharks-vancouver-canucks-850x560

When drafting, it may be useful to draft some multi-position players to make your lineups more malleable to ensure that every position is filled come game day. I’ve used this strategy for years to a moderate degree of success. Regardless of your strategy, I feel that having a few of these players on your team is a very powerful asset!

Note: For this article, I only used Yahoo’s position eligibilities and checked for the top 600 O-Ranked players. Also, I included the stats for Yahoo’s default leagues, but I also added Faceoff-Wins (FOW), Penalty-In-Minutes (PIM), Hits (HitF), and Blocks (BkS), since a lot of leagues use those stats. Yahoo also tends to update position eligibilities in the January of each season, so these position eligibilities are not permanent! I plan on doing an article update then though, so keep tuning in!

Way back with Wayne: The Origins of Fantasy Hockey

By:

My father, Wayne, has been a life-long hockey fan. He loves to watch it, he loved to coach his kids in it, and he loved to play it. In this segment, I pick my dad’s brain about the progression of hockey from a fan’s perspective.

Many of you reading this are probably like me, you are absolutely obsessed with playing fantasy hockey. You delve hours into research before, during, and after each season just so that you can get an edge on your fellow Fantasy GMs and finally get bragging rights, and likely having your name immortalized on a trophy along with some cold hard cash. With so many different ways to play Fantasy Hockey and how much depth and complication can be involved with them, it’s crazy to think about how far Fantasy Hockey has come in a few decades. Luckily for me, my father has been participating/running the Cook Cup playoff hockey pool for 35 years and is the perfect candidate to get an idea of the climate of Fantasy Hockey back in the day.

A Closer Look At: Coaching

By:
McLellan-homepage-061709

Since this years playoffs have begun, the teams that have found themselves on the outside looking in suddenly find themselves with a host of questions that need answering.  Invariably, the question that usually gets asked first is, “Do we continue with the current head coach?”  Now I’m sure we all are used to the usual media tropes surrounding coaches.  Such nuggets like; “He has lost the room.”  “He wasn’t a players coach.” Etc.  Further to that, you ultimately cannot replace an entire team (yes I know another cliche), especially in a salary cap league like the NHL.  The thing I’m wondering is, how can a coach be so valuable and expendable at the exact same time?
